Illegal Dumping

Illegal dumping is an ongoing and highly visible problem and with increased cost of waste disposal at landfill sites, there is the realisation that there will be a heightened potential for illegal dumping incidents to increase.

The Illegal Dumping Course course aims to improve the capacity of officers to implement effective strategies to prevent littering and illegal dumping as well as proactively tackle the issues by investigating incidents of littering and dumping.

Target Audience

This two-day course is designed for officers who may be required to conduct investigations into illegal dumping, as well as those who develop education or other compliance strategies to combat and prevent illegal dumping. Positions may include Waste Management Officers, R.I.D. Squad officers,  Regional Officers, Rangers, Compliance Officers, Environmental Officers, Health and Building Inspectors Environmental Educators.

Learning outcomes

In this two-day course, participants will:

  • Understand the waste regulatory framework
  • Understand the extent of the illegal dumping and littering problem within their jurisdiction
  • Identify offences relating to littering and illegal dumping
  • Understand the behaviour motivating offenders
  • Identify illegal dumping prevention techniques 
  • Understand the processes for investigating illegal dumping incidents
  • Share case studies from different Councils and agencies on how to manage littering and illegal dumping.
