RTC Group EMS Gap Analysis and
Environmental Awareness Training

The RTC Group provides a range of building services across commercial and residential sectors, facilities maintenance and shop-fitting and supplies. The company services the major centres of NSW, including Sydney, Central Coast, Hunter Valley, Mid-North Coast and the Central West. The company has well-developed quality and safety programs in place and also recognises its responsibility for environmental protection. As such the RTC Group developed a draft Environmental Management System, linked to its existing quality and safety systems and which reflected the requirements of ISO 14001.

SD Environmental Management was initially engaged in July 2006 to undertake an EMS gap analysis to compare the RTC EMS with the requirements of the ISO 14001:2004 standard. A detailed gap analysis report was prepared for the client identifying how the system could be improved to more accurately reflect the requirements of the international standard.

SD Environmental Management provided further advice to the RTC Group during the preparation of system documentation and processes and was then engaged to develop a four-module environmental training program for RTC Group staff and contractors. Training program modules included:

  • Module 1 – Environmental Awareness and Responsibility
  • Module 2 – The RTC Group Environmental Management System
  • Module 3 – Site Management and Risk Analysis
  • Module 4 – Spill Prevention and Control

Each module reflected the key requirements of the EMS and associated environmental management plans and was accompanied by a trainer’s guide and lesson plan to ensure efficient and effective delivery of the module by internal trainers. Industry and site-specific case studies were also included in the training material.
