Case Study:

Bin Trim Training NSW Environment Protection Authority

NSW businesses send more than 1.8 million tonnes of business waste to landfill each year. More than 70% of this could be reused or recycled. Reducing waste is good for business – it can reduce costs, save time, build staff morale and enhance your corporate reputation. Generating less waste also saves valuable water, energy and raw materials. Bin Trim has been designed to help small and medium sized businesses that employ between one and 199 employees to quickly identify simple actions they can take to start cutting waste and boost profits. EPA-funded Bin Trim assessors conduct free waste and recycling assessments and work with businesses to identify ideas and actions for reducing wastes and costs associated with waste removal.

NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) engaged SD Environmental Management to develop content and deliver small group training workshops for waste assessors on the online Bin Trim tool and the Bin Trim rebate application process.

The objectives of the training workshops were to:
  • Provide engaging, interactive and hands-on training for Bin Trim assessors
  • Provide targeted training sessions for grantees and waste assessors to guide them through all the steps involved in using the Bin Trim tool, correctly entering data and generating Bin Trim rebate applications
  • Improve the quality of data entered into the online Bin Trim tool
  • Increase the knowledge and confidence of grantees and waste assessors to apply for a Bin Trim rebate on behalf of an eligible applicant.

The scenario-based training was well-received by some 93 waste assessors across NSW who are now actively undertaking waste assessments of small to medium enterprises (SMEs) on behalf of the NSW EPA. As a result of the training, inexperienced assessors indicated they have increased confidence in conducting Bin Trim assessments, correctly entering data into the Bin Trim tool and making recommendations for recycling equipment rebates.
