Delivery of the Revised POEO Act for Authorised Officers Course

The POEO Act for Authorised Officers course has been designed to equip Authorised Officers within local government with the necessary knowledge to fulfil their responsibilities as outlined in the Protection of the Environment Operations Act (POEO) 1997. The POEO Act provides a key role for local councils in regulating non-scheduled industry.

Authorised officers within local government are responsible for the management of all environmental media: air, noise, water and waste for which they are the appropriate regulatory authority (ARA).

Target Audience

This two-day course is designed for any officer required to administer the POEO Act. Positions may include Environmental Managers, Waste Management Officers, Regional Officers, Rangers, Compliance Officers, Environmental Officers, Health and Building Inspectors.

Learning outcomes

In this two-day course, participants will:

  • Implement strategies to prevent, minimise, and manage environmental pollution and waste
  • Identify and interpret legislation that is relevant to the areas of responsibility and the powers of Authorised Officers
  • Organise and supervise the use and administration of regulatory tools
  • Understand and compare the powers of Authorised Officers from all other regulatory authorities
  • Share case studies from different Councils and agencies on how they administer the POEO Act.
